Every night at 1700, Soldiers, Family Members, and Civil Servants see, hear, and participate in rituals that honor our nation, while continuing traditions as old as the US Army. Cars stop, work stops, games stop, as we salute the flag.
When George Washington first took command of the Continental Army in 1775, drums and drums were already a part of military life. In the era before radio, there was no other way for a commander to communicate his orders amidst a cacophony of rifle fire, clashing of swords, and cannons. For example, groups of workers far from camp collecting food for horses know to return to camp when they hear the call "Retreat".
At an outpost in the late 1800's, the horns call Soldiers and their Families. These small, lonely fortresses with garrisons of only one or two hundred Soldiers were often far from the nearest town. The house clock is set for the trumpet call; one Army wife even used "Assembly" as a cue for the kids to go to bed.
The day started early for the Soldiers at the frontier, as they did today. They started feeding and caring for the horses before dawn, and after the "Reveille" they had breakfast. The soldiers gathered for inspection when they heard calls for "Assembly". The soldier with the best uniform and equipment is elected to the rank of commander, which gives him bragging rights and (sometimes) a subsequent day off.

After inspection, Soldiers are trained in critical skills with which today's Dog-Faced Soldiers are probably familiar: marching, bayonet fencing, marksmanship, and crew gene drills. A "Mess Call" at lunch ended the morning's training.
The soldiers spent most of the afternoon on drudgery, such as chopping wood, tending to buildings and stables, and tending horses. The Soldiers return from these duties when the trumpeter sounds "Remember" giving the Soldiers time to prepare for the night parade and "Retreat".
The day at most border outposts ends with an entire commando parade around the central square. This is a way to check the discipline and equipment of the unit, but also social events attended by almost all Family Members. Before the 1890's Soldiers had to do it
